Acne scar treatmentLasers are used as an option to prevent or treat moderate acne. It also has shown promises in treating severe acne which include cysts and nodules. Laser therapy has proven to work better on lighter skin, with fewer side effects. Lasers work by using concentrated light, which can penetrate the skin. Lasers work by primarily exciting bacterial compounds called porphyrins. Laser light can damage the wall of the bacteria and effectively kill it. Fewer acne bacteria will help in reducing the symptoms of acne. Laser treatments can also reduce sebum levels or skin oil levels. Lower sebum levels will result in lower incidence of severe acne. The laser can also provide anti-inflammatory properties. As acne is mainly an inflammatory disease, reducing inflammation will also help in reducing acne. Laser treatments will need to be done at least three times, and each a month apart. More frequent laser treatments may be recommended by your doctor, depending on the severity of the acne.

What are the types of lasers that can be used?

Doctors will use various types of lasers in treating acne. They are characterized according to the wavelength and color of the light they emit. The different types of colors have different penetration strengths. There are 3 types of lasers used in treating acne.

  Pulsed dye lasers (PDL)

  Potassium titanyl phosphate lasers (KTP)

Acne scar treatment  Infrared Lasers

Most of the lasers that are used to treat acne are called fractional lasers. These lasers can point a very small column of light onto your skin, compared with lasers that shine light over a wider area of the skin that can lead to more side effects. Infrared lasers are capable of penetrating the skin more deeply than other lasers. Laser penetration will depend on how dark the skin is as the darker skin will not allow lasers to penetrate as far.

Lasers can also be used alongside other acne treatment options. Combination of treatments with laser treatment can result in more effective and improved results.
