Sunlight in
the winter is a welcome idea for anyone, especially as it helps to keep warm
and to make the home less musty during dark, cold days. It is also associated
with reduced rick of depression and other mental problems. This is why wishes
of “a sunny day” are commonly heard of especially in the winter months.
How harsh is sunlight during winter?
Many in
Huntington would relish the time outdoors on a sunny winter day, to make a great
snowman or toboggan on the hills. But did you know that sunlight during the
winter is as bad as that of summer and perhaps even worse?. Over 90% of skin
cancers are thought to be caused by sun exposure. While people take great care
towards sun protection when they are at the beach, using sunscreen generously,
the same attention is not shown during winter season. Higher elevation leads to
more UV exposure. This exposure increases about 5% with every 1000 feet above
sea level. Therefore snow covered mountains put you more at risk of developing
skin cancers than the beach. The fact that 80% of UV rays are reflected by the
snow also increases the risk of skin cancer.
What are ways to protect your skin even in the winter?
Using a
broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is essential. It does not
matter if you are dressed in covered clothing, apply sunscreen half an hour
before you go skiing or do any other activities on snow slopes. Reapplication
is needed if you spend long hours outdoors.
Covering up
as much as possible is another method to prevent UV rays penetrating your skin.
While most people cover their bodies snugly during winter they do not take much
precaution with their faces. Facial skin is sensitive and even if you do not
put yourself in any danger, your skin will still feel dry and unhealthy if you
do not apply adequate moisturizer or cold cream along with sunscreen. Sun
exposure is known to cause age spots in all types of skin.
