Q&A with Dermatology Associates: How can I manage my psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common condition caused by the rapid build-up of cells on the skin’s surface. While there is no cure, you can prevent and manage redness, burning, and other symptoms of psoriasis in Centreville VA. The board-certified dermatologists at the Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia explain …

Q. How can I make my symptoms go away?

All relief starts with an accurate diagnosis. Because many conditions are mistaken for psoriasis, including ringworm and seborrheic dermatitis, a consultation and exam is a must.

Q. I’ve been diagnosed with psoriasis. What’s the best approach for me?

That depends on if the type of psoriasis, as well as your skin type and the severity of your symptoms. Generally, we may recommend topical creams and ointments, prescription medications, therapies, and lifestyle modifications.

Q. What are some of the most common products for psoriasis?

Some of our patients see improvements with OTC topicals, but with so many products containing a dizzying array of ingredients, not all work well on every person to improve skin appearance and feel. We’ll tailor treatments while minimizing potential side effects, and may recommend a combination of medications. Since some products lose effectiveness over time, you may cycle through different options, including topical corticosteroids and retinoids, coal tar, and salicylic acid.

Q. What procedures are available?

We offer many different types of light-based therapies at DANV. The idea is to precisely apply Ultraviolet light to the affected areas. The light penetrates the skin, and the energy produced slows the growth of affected cells responsible for scaling, redness, and itching. These treatments may reduce the need for medications to manage symptoms over the longer term.

Psoriasis also has a number of “triggers,” such as stress, smoking, and heavy drinking. Home care like the use of mild soaps with added oils and fats, can prevent the “worst” of psoriasis. Call 866-808-3140 to schedule a consultation.
