Our surgical and medical dermatology services in Mountain View are as varied as the more than 3,000 conditions managed and treated by skin specialists. Here, we offer a glimpse into just some of those conditions, and the ways The Menkes Clinic & Surgery Center may prevent, relieve, or eliminate them.
Q. What distinguishes medical and surgical dermatology from other types of dermatological services?
Medical dermatology revolves around the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases that affect not only the skin, but also the hair, nails, and mucus membranes. Surgical and minimally-invasive procedures improve skin health and function, with an added cosmetic benefit.
Q. What are some of the most common conditions that may be treated at your office?
It’s estimated 80 percent of the world’s people have acne at some point. Acne can arise for the first time later in life, due to hormonal changes. It can leave behind scars that may require surgical treatment or other therapies. Psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea are also commonly treated with a mix of professional-grade products, medications, and therapies. We also see patients who are suffering from skin infections like impetigo, hives, dermatitis, and those who are concerned about new or changing moles. Atypical moles are more likely to develop into melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Skin cancer is now the most common type of cancer in the U.S.
Q. What types of treatments can help?
Since there are so many different types of conditions, not to mention different types of psoriasis or acne, treatment approaches are unique to each patient. You may get relief from topical creams or ointments, prescription medications, laser- and light-based therapies, or resurfacing techniques. We are also equipped to offer the “gold standard” in skin cancer treatment: Mohs Micrographic Surgery. MMS is a precision surgery for complex, recurrent Basal Cell and Squamous Cells Carcinomas and some melanomas.
